Well, if you’re a fresh graduate then you might know the struggle of being out there in the market for a job. All the frustrating chants of your aunties, and the potential rishta proposals heading your way. Also, your parents asking you again and again “Aagya kya plan hai?”
I know that feel, anyway just asking “Waqai agay kya plan hai?”
In case you have tried everything already…
… allow us to tell you that “Aagay kya kya plan ho sakta hai.”
Disclaimer: This blog is targeted primarily at electrical engineers out there. Not one? Ham rok saktay bhala aapko… parhlo aagay.
The speed at which technology is advancing, engineering jobs are getting diverse everyday. Ways to earn livelihood are also getting convenient. Whereas, engineering salaries are getting higher globally according to glass-door average engineer’s salary is $83k per-annum, however that might not be the case in Pakistan. Let’s look into some hot applied engineering professions and ways to earn livelihood for engineers, that are increasing in demand. Within some years these trends would also fall into Pakistan, and you would be thankful that we told you about this beforehand.
Following are ways and professions that you should consider being engineer.
Internet of Things:
IoT is one of the hottest topics in tech-industry right now. If we look into how the tech is developed we see a mix of hardware and software. Whereas, neither a computer scientist nor an electrical/electronics engineer possesses skills to develop a complete end to end solution. However, there is a catch here, increased accessibility of technology learning resources it’s easier to learn software skills. This allows any electrical engineer to develop an IoT Solution providing them chance to apply for IoT Developer Jobs, where they program hardware and interface it with cloud and software applications. You may want to look into our IoT Starter Kit or IoT Developer Kit to get your hands dirty with IoT in your free time.
Few year back freelancing websites were majorly known because of Graphics Designing, Website Designing & Development and App Development. Unfortunately, these fields are getting saturated day by day making it hard for a new entrant to earn more. There was no or very little concept of virtual hardware design & consultancy back then. Now its picking pace, engineers are doing hardware design freelancing projects on websites like UpWork, Fiverr etc.
Hardware Product Design: We get to see amazing and cool hardware devices releasing everyday on social media and on kick-starter. Many of them have a massive impact-factor and some of them are solving mundane problems. You can learn hardware product design and embedded systems to put together a compact and seamless hardware device that solves your local problem and later commercialize it. Whether its a selfie drone, water pump controller or autonomous security system. All it takes is to design its architecture, circuit board, putting sensors and actuators together and put them to work. Make a custom board and house it in beautiful case and commercialize it. If you don’t think you have entrepreneurial traits, still these skills comes in handy at many local and international companies like Ublox, MentorGraphics, Google, Facebook, Siemens, GE and many others.
Last but not the least, robotics. As we all know robotics is the future. Industrial automation is getting common all around the world. Due to excessive hardware commercialization, technology is getting cheaper day by day and making it easier to build cheap robots and automation devices. Whether its a vending machine for tooth pastes or a car assembling robot everything is build on the same principle. All you need to have some sound hardware skills i.e. electronics and embedded system, geometry and mathematics. You are all set to put motors in action with advanced control systems to see if your programs are doing what they are designed for.
OK! Enough is Enough, let’s be honest have you learnt machine maintenance and repair skills. Maybe, studied how to check readings of a working generator and write them down in a register. Four years of a professional engineering degree, and you ended up doing something which an electrician can do better than you.
Contrary to need, engineers do not focus on skills that are needed by big companies making it difficult for them to find the right candidates. Are you also looking for job? maybe trying you luck in one of these emerging fields may lead you to a better opportunity.
If all else fails, you can always be a blogger just like me. *cries in a corner*
