So, you were surfing around, going through your feed and you saw this new event coming up and you were like “what is this all about?” or maybe this is the first time you read about this (not that it makes any difference). Anyways if you find it intriguing, you’re at the right place. So what is this Hackathon thing about?
Telenor Hackathon is an event hosted by Telenor, in search for the best IoT based solution out there. We all know there is alot of talent in our youth and the only thing that keeps them from showing what they are capable of, is the lack of opportunities…. look at the news if you don’t believe me, every once in a while there is this kid in his school years who achieves something unbelievable and its gets us thinking, what about those numerous students out there who aren’t that lucky? What if they had a great idea but they were unable to actually make it a reality because they didn’t have the right tools or the right help to make it possible? That’s exactly what Telenor aims to do, to enable these Geniuses!
Ok so now you’re all hyped up about and all those ideas you had but could never really work on because you never had the resources, are resurfacing again. And you’re thinking how is this event going to help me? Well to answer that, let’s go through how the event is gonna go.
Telenor Hackathon is a two day IoT (internet if things) based event. Where teams from all around the country will participate. The platform that will be used for all this is Telenor’s own IoT platform. Using the MQTT protocol, it’s designed to support as many devices as you want, to support custom apps for your projects, monitoring and much more.
But what’s amazing about this event is how the teams will be helped with their projects. All the teams that will participate will be provided with mentorship and technical support for their projects. Telenor’s own IoT experts will be there to help the teams with the platform understanding and integration with their projects and when to help you out with the hardware, whether it is project development or hardware to software integration, a team of experts from your favorite company, DIYGeeks will be there to help you through it all.
But that’s not all! Participating teams will also be provided with business mentorship so that the can develop their own business model after they are done with the all the technical aspects of your project.
Sounds amazing right? It is. But that’s just the preparations we talked about. What about the next phase? How are the teams going to be evaluated and judged?
On the end of the Second day, each team will have to pitch their ideas before an esteemed judge’s panel. And the winning teams will be selected on both technical and business basis. And the Prize money will be presented to the top teams after event dinner on the second day.
Well that all sounds great! But what do you need to do to be a part of this event? Well for starters obviously you need an idea. It is recommended that you are done with the hardware side of your project. So that you have more time to refine your product and work on the software part of it. The participants have to bring their own hardware so you better have all the components you need for your projects, but if you don’t and you’re not sure what to buy… Don’t worry, DIY GEEKS got your back, their specially designed IoT kits include almost everything that you might need in making your project. But what if I don’t really have a defined idea for this event? What are my options then?
I mean yeah sure. Not everyone would have a proper idea or a project for this event. That doesn’t mean that you cannot participate. You can work on projects related to:
- Home automation:
As the name suggests. Home automation includes automating homes to make the life to the inhabitants easy. Like automatic lights and fans, smart climate control, automated water pumps etc.
- Smart security systems:
Smart security systems is also a great category to work on. That include smart alarms and autonomous security systems to enable seamless security for work and home even when you are asleep or away.
- Automated vehicles:
You might have heard about Tesla (if not google it), these are self-driving electric vehicles. All of these vehicles are connected to internet providing high-end car analysis while driving i.e. battery consumption, real-time tracking, centralized controlling and lock. Why not turn Mehran into smart car by equipping it with over internet door lock, fuel monitor and much more.
- Smart farming
Farmers have been the biggest entrepreneurs of Pakistan. But our farming yield are very less compare to other European countries who have switched to smart farming. Considering Pakistan has most favorable farming conditions if we build smart farming devices we can increase the farming yield to a much higher number globally.
- Smart energy metering
We are in energy crisis for a very long time, but do you actually think the problem is just with the govt. strategies? No, we have been playing a crucial role in creating energy crisis by not being self-aware of where we are wasting electricity. Why not turn our home appliances smart and figure out what devices are consuming excessive electricity? How cool it will be to predict your house bill while looking at 5 days of electricity consumption.
- Environmental sensing devices
World is advancing at a very fast rate, but are we smart enough? We aren’t even aware of the quality of air we breathe and due to same reason we have never tried to purify it. Become self-aware citizens by making air quality monitoring and purification devices.
- Industrial automation system
Want to play big? Automate the manufacturing and operation industries by connecting all the machines to internet. Design central control panel, analysis and monitoring apps to enable engineers analyze and control their systems more efficiently hence leading it to save energy as well.
